CAUTION

1.	The shaft must never be operated without water.
2.	The clearance shown in the above list is to be considered for the application at normal temperature of water. When the water temperature reads more than 30°C, it is recommendable to have a little bigger clearance.
3.	When inserting the shaft into our rubber bearings, any grease or oil must not be used. Soapy water is recommendable for the purpose.
4.	Our rubber bearings should not be left near any heat, especially in direct sunshine for a long period of time.

PLANNING

(1) Maximum Load onto Rubber Bearings

The maximum load in consideration of economical efficiency is 2.5 kgf/cm2 and, it is recommendable to use rubber bearings on the load between 1 to 1.5 kgf/cm2.

(2) Lubricating Water

Standard water volume necessary for rubber bearing is calculated on the following formula.
Shaft Dia. shown in centi-meter(cm)×3-3.5 liter per minute.
The above figure is considered to be enough for smooth rotation of shaft under different conditions.

Although the shaft may operate smoothly in the water without pump and pipe line, it is recommendable for rubber bearings to supply enough water with adequate pressure through pipelines.
In case of cutter shaft bearing of dredging vessel, a lot of sands or small stones are involved in the water and the required water volume is calculated on the under mentioned formula.
Necessary water volume for cutter shaft bearings of dredger:

Precautions at design

●Allowable PV value
	Since allowable contact pressure is set as 6 (kgf/cm2) and allowable peripheral speed is set as 12 (m/sec), the allowable PV value becomes 6 × 12 = 72 (kgf/cm2･m/sec).
●Water supply amount
	Supply an amount of 2 × bearing inside diameter (cm) = Q (l/min).
●Tolerance of the bearing outside diameter
	It is based on clearance fit, in principle.
●Amount of swelling
	The design value for the swelling amount under the usual tap water and seawater is 0.10 mm at the diameter.
●Amount of expansion
	Since the linear expansion coefficient of rubber is large, the inside diameter produces a dimensional change in response to temperature. For the standard size, the amount of change in the bearing inside diameter by temperature is as shown below.

●The basis for determining clearance:
	The lower limit of clearance should be determined by adding the following items. Then, determine the bearing bore tolerance by adding at least 0.15 mm for processing tolerance to this value.
	1.	Minimum clearance: The minimum clearance is defined as a minimum gap where a shaft can be rotated by hand, by taking into account the tolerance of pump assembly elements, etc., and this is set as 0.05 mm.

Precautions at handling/usage

● Precautions at handling

1.	Avoid direct sunlight.
2.	Avoid adherence of oil and/or organic solvent.
3.	Do not place in a location with a high temperature.
4.	Do not put a heavy load on top.
5.	Perform handling as calmly as possible and do not create any shocks.
6.	When inserting a shaft, never apply oil, such as grease, into the bearings. Rubber swells due to oil and the inside diameter becomes smaller. Also, the lifespan is shortened.

● Storage procedure

1.	Store in a cool and dark place.
2.	Store in a place with few changes in temperature.
3.	Store in a place where there are no shocks applied from the outside.
4.	Avoid places where adhesion of chemicals, solvent, oil, etc., as well as gas, etc. may occur.

Precautions at design

● About the outside diameter of the shaft sleeve

The diameter of the sleeve shall be processed slightly smaller than the nominal diameter, which is to be set as the maximum dimension. The inside diameter of bearings has been finished considering the allowable minimum clearance.

(As for the tolerance, process/finish it so that the (+) side becomes 0, and target the (－) side.)

● About the outside diameter of bearing

Since the outside diameter of the rubber bearings is set as the tolerance “k6″ for marine vessels, determine the relative fitting dimensions with brackets in accordance with the locations for use and fitting method. Generally, “transition fit” is the standard. Regarding “clearance fit,” we have also obtained approval for a partial ship classification, and we can respond to your concerns.

● About the time of replacement:

As abrasion/wear progresses, the clearance between shafts and bearings increases similarly to other bearings. However, unlike other bearings, rubber bearings absorb impact and vibration even if clearance increases, and can be used with ease, even in the case of high speed rotation. But, when the clearance increases, the bending stress of shafts becomes larger, and it may develop into crack generation of the shafts by contact with seawater, etc.

In each ship classification, the usable limit of clearance has been decided by each shaft size, in order to suppress the shaft bending stress to 2 kgf/mm2 or less, from the viewpoint of vessels’ safety.

The bearing itself can be used under conditions with the above-mentioned amount of wear or more.

(Note) If the bending stress of propeller shafts becomes 2 kgf/mm2 or more, there is a risk of crack generation due to contact with seawater, etc. Therefore, determine the time of replacement by each vessel, considering its limit value.

1.	Full mold halved (separate) type With this type, replacement of the bearing is possible without extracting a shaft. It is provided with a suitable slope at the separated face to enable mounting and dismounting of the bearing easily.
2.	Bearing length Since the length of the overboard bracket bearings is decided as the calculation diameter of the propeller shaft × 4 times, it is not always necessary to make it as the inside diameter of rubber bearings × 4 times.
3.	Outside diameter and thickness of flange

■The life of rubber bearings

Generally, a lifespan of 2 to 5 times compared with lignum vitae can be expected.

As it can differ by sailing regions and operating periods, there is also an example used for ten years or more.

■Lubricating water
	Water supply amount = Shaft diameter (cm unit) × 3 to 3.5 l/min Although the above-mentioned calculated water amount is set as the standard, this is a value that satisfies all conditions, and the bearings can be used even if water is not flowed forcibly. However, since an accident may occur easily, a forced water supply should be carried out as far as possible. ●Material of bearings

■Rubber material

Regarding the rubber, a special synthetic rubber is selected and blended to promote smooth rotation of the shafts as under-water bearings in consideration of abrasion resistance, water resistance, and oil resistance.

■Shell material

For the external cylinders, material with excellent adhesiveness to rubber is adopted, while considering water resistance, strength, and corrosion resistance.

Full mold type:	BC3 (bronze series), TM-1 (equivalent to HBsC1), or YBsC3 (brass series), SCS13 (SUS304), etc.
Segmental type:	For the strip base metal, the brass plate is adopted as the standard. BC3 is adopted for the bush (housing).

In addition to the abovementioned materials, iron, aluminum, various kinds of stainless steel, etc. may also be used as shell material.
